Discover more about MUSEO LA ERMITA

MUSEO LA ERMITA is located in Salcajá, a town in the Quetzaltenango department of Guatemala. The museum is adjoined to the Ermita de la Concepción, also known as La Conquistadora (The Conqueress), which was the first church founded in Central America in 1524. The church's founding coincided with the Spanish conquest of the Maya K'iche' kingdom. The Ermita de la Concepción features a simple design with influences from Náhuatl, Arabic, and medieval cultures. Its architecture includes a Romanesque cupola and thick walls with strategically placed windows, reflecting its original purpose as a fortified structure. Inside, visitors can view embossed silver objects and the oldest altarpieces in Central America, as well as a relic of the first effigy of the Virgin Mary brought from Europe. The church also holds the image of the Immaculate Conception. The museum displays pre-Hispanic objects found in the region, providing insights into the area's history and cultural importance. The town of Salcajá has strived to maintain the church and its museum, which welcomes visitors most mornings. While masses are still held on Saturdays, the church is mainly open for special events and holidays. Salcajá is also known for its production of corte, the traditional Mayan women's clothing, and the locally made red liquor called Caldo de Frutas.
