Car
If you are driving to Skútafoss, start from the main road Þjóðvegur (Route 1). Navigate your way towards the eastern side of Vatnajökull National Park. From the town of Höfn, continue on Route 1 for approximately 45 km until you reach the junction for Þjóðvegur (Route 781). Turn onto Route 781 and continue driving for about 10 km. You will see a sign for Skútafoss. Park your vehicle in the designated parking area near the falls. Be mindful of parking regulations and any fees that may apply.
Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavík to the town of Höfn. Once you arrive in Höfn, you will need to rent a car or take a taxi to reach Skútafoss, as public transportation options are limited in this area. From Höfn, follow Route 1 for about 45 km, then turn onto Route 781 and continue for approximately 10 km. Taxis may be available at the bus station, but it’s advisable to book in advance. Be aware of any costs associated with taxi services.
Walking
After parking your car at the designated area near Skútafoss, you may need to walk a short distance to the waterfall itself. Follow the marked paths that lead from the parking area to the viewing points. The walk is relatively easy and offers scenic views of the surrounding area, but be sure to wear appropriate footwear as the terrain can be uneven.
