Discover more about Linmar Gardens

Linmar Gardens, nestled on a hillside overlooking historic Galena, is a secluded, privately owned 3.5-acre garden that provides a tranquil escape into nature. In 1976, Harold Martin transformed what was once a rocky limestone bluff into a lush retreat. The gardens feature vibrant annual and perennial flowers artistically planted around inviting grounds. Visitors can meander along paths through a collection of themed gardens, including the Four Seasons Garden with unique sculptures and the Sunken Garden, built on the ruins of one of the first African American Baptist churches in Illinois. The Sunken Garden features the remains of the church, with the walls of the basement and a "Baptismal Font" fountain serving as a reminder of its history. Other highlights include flowing brooks, ponds, and a 20-foot waterfall cascading from a natural bluff. A replica of a small mine cut into the side of a limestone wall and two gazebos provide a place to reflect. Guided tours, which last approximately 45 minutes, provide insightful information about the gardens' history and design. The terrain can be uneven, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Linmar Gardens is open seasonally, typically from mid-May to October.
