Discover more about Joliet Iron Works Park

The Joliet Iron Works Historic Site offers a unique blend of industrial history and natural beauty. Once the site of the second-largest steel mill in the United States, the 52-acre park now features preserved ruins and walking trails that tell the story of Joliet's rise as a major industrial center. Established in 1869, the Joliet Iron Works played a vital role in America's industrial boom, producing essential materials for railroads, buildings, and bridges. The Illinois Steel Company operated the plant, employing thousands of workers, many of whom were immigrants. The site included four blast furnaces, coke ovens, and various support facilities, producing approximately 2,000 tons of pig iron daily. The steel produced here was used in the construction of railroads and buildings in Chicago. Although operations ceased in the early 1980s, the Forest Preserve District of Will County acquired the site in the 1990s, transforming it into a historic site. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the ironworks via a 0.59-mile paved trail with interpretive signs. The trail guides visitors through the foundations of the blast furnaces, casting sheds, and other structures, offering insights into the iron-making process and the lives of the workers. The park also connects to the 7.57-mile I&M Canal Trail, providing additional recreational opportunities.
