Discover more about Ulysses S. Grant Monument

Located in Lincoln Park, the Ulysses S. Grant Monument is a commanding tribute to the celebrated Civil War general and two-term President of the United States. The monument features an equestrian bronze sculpture of Grant dressed in his Civil War uniform, set atop a massive arched base of rusticated stone. The monument's creation was spurred by spontaneous public support following Grant's death in 1885. Tens of thousands of people donated to commission a memorial in his honor. Cincinnati sculptor Louis Rebisso was selected to design the statue, with a granite pedestal suggested by William Le Baron Jenney. Rebisso had gained prominence for his equestrian sculptures. The monument was finally dedicated on October 7, 1891. The dedication ceremonies were attended by over 200,000 people, including Grant's widow and relatives, members of his regiment, and several governors and senators. At the time, the bronze sculpture was the largest ever cast in the United States. The Grant Monument is situated just west of N. Cannon Drive, between W. Fullerton Avenue and E. North Avenue. The statue portrays Grant on his horse Cincinnati, a Kentucky thoroughbred, with historically accurate details such as his field glasses, hat, uniform, spurs, saddle, and holster.
