Sri Akal Takht Sahib, meaning the 'Throne of the Timeless One,' is the highest seat of Sikh authority, situated in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. Its foundation was laid by Guru Hargobind in 1606, marking a significant moment in Sikh history when the community formally embraced its commitment to both spiritual and temporal concerns. The Akal Takht symbolizes the concept of 'Miri-Piri,' the intertwining of spiritual and political power. Originally a simple platform where Guru Hargobind would address his followers and administer justice, the Akal Takht has evolved into an impressive five-story structure. The building features a gold-leafed dome, marble inlay, and exquisitely painted wall panels. The Jathedar of the Akal Takht serves as the highest spokesperson of the Sikh Panth, offering guidance on religious, social, and political matters. Visitors to the Akal Takht can witness the daily ceremonies, including the evening prayer (Rehras Sahib) and Ardas, where the priest recites scriptures while holding a sword. The Guru Granth Sahib is brought to the Akal Takht every evening and returned to the Golden Temple in the morning in a ceremonial procession. The Akal Takht has played a crucial role in Sikh history, serving as a symbol of resistance against oppression and a center for community decision-making.
