Chopta is strategically located as the epicenter of the Panch Kedar, which includes five sacred Shiva temples: Kedarnath, Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar. The Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world, is a 3.5 km trek from Chopta. The Chandrashila Peak, offering 360° views of the Himalayan range, is another 1.5 km from Tungnath. Historically, Chopta has been part of ancient trade routes and is mentioned in Hindu mythology, believed to be visited by Lord Rama during his exile. The Tungnath temple is believed to be over 1000 years old, with its foundation laid by Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers.
