Delhi Gate: A Mughal-Era Entrance to the Walled City

Delhi Gate, located in present-day Old Delhi, is a significant landmark that offers a glimpse into the city's rich history. Constructed in 1638 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who also commissioned the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the Taj Mahal, it served as one of the main entrances to Shahjahanabad, the walled city that is now known as Old Delhi. This imposing gate, made of red sandstone, exemplifies Mughal architectural design with its grand archway, intricate carvings, and robust walls. It is similar in style to the Kashmiri Gate, another gate of the walled city. Delhi Gate connected New Delhi with the old walled city. Historically, the gate controlled entry and exit to the city, opening to roads leading to important locations. Over the centuries, Delhi Gate has witnessed numerous historical events, including the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the British Raj. While it once had counterparts, it is one of only a few remaining gates. Today, Delhi Gate is a heritage site maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. While it sits amidst a bustling street, it remains an important piece of Delhi's cultural and architectural heritage, attracting history enthusiasts and tourists alike.
