The Marine Aquarium & Regional Centre (MARC) in Digha offers an immersive experience into the marine ecosystem of the Bay of Bengal. Established in 1989 by the Zoological Survey of India, MARC serves as both a research hub and a popular tourist attraction. The aquarium opened to the public in 2003 and the Marine Museum in 2016. The center features 32 tanks, including 24 large marine tanks and 8 freshwater tanks. Visitors can observe a variety of marine creatures, including sea anemones, rays, lobsters, crabs, sharks, sea snakes, butterfly fish, and horseshoe crabs. The Marine Museum displays over 500 marine species, including bony fish, cartilaginous fish, corals, and mollusks. Life-size models of five species of sea turtles found in India are also exhibited. MARC plays a crucial role in marine research and conservation, focusing on species native to the Bay of Bengal. The center also provides educational programs and awareness posters related to marine life, biodiversity, and conservation.
