    If you're in the East Village area, walk towards Robert D. Ray Drive. Head east on Grand Avenue from the intersection of East Grand Avenue and 5th Street, then turn left onto Robert D. Ray Drive. The garden entrance will be on your right.

Ray, the garden honors his humanitarian work, including his efforts in resettling Southeast Asian refugees in Iowa. The garden was developed by the Chinese Cultural Center of America and officially opened in 2009. It quickly became a significant landmark, celebrating the harmonious blend of nature and Asian-inspired architecture. The garden features a 37-foot-tall Chinese pavilion, stone pagodas, sculptural rock formations, and a pond that cascades into the Des Moines River. Visitors can stroll through the Character Garden, which features six granite boulders inscribed with Chinese characters symbolizing trustworthiness, caring, respect, fairness, citizenship, and responsibility. The garden's design also includes drumlins and wetland pockets, reflecting the regional topography and ecology. Informational boards throughout the garden provide insights into Asian communities in Iowa.
