Discover more about Raccoon River Park

Raccoon River Park is a sprawling oasis in the heart of West Des Moines, offering a diverse range of activities and natural landscapes across its 631 acres. The park's centerpiece, Blue Heron Lake, spans 232 acres and provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and swimming. Originally a farmstead in 1907, the land was later used for mining purposes by Martin Marietta until the Iowa Department of Natural Resources purchased it. The city of West Des Moines then partnered with the IDNR to develop the area into a recreational haven, starting in 1994. The park boasts a 3.2-mile trail that loops around Blue Heron Lake, perfect for walking, running, or biking. This trail offers scenic views of the lake and the surrounding Raccoon River, providing a natural escape within the city. For those seeking more active pursuits, there are softball and soccer complexes, an archery facility, and even an ice rink in the winter. Raccoon River Park is also family-friendly, featuring an all-inclusive playground with sensory elements, picnic shelters, and a swimming beach. The park hosts various events throughout the year, such as the Raccoon River Palooza, celebrating community and outdoor recreation. A dog park provides a dedicated space for furry friends to play. The park's commitment to sustainability is evident in its irrigation system, which draws water directly from Blue Heron Lake for the softball complex. Raccoon River Park continues to evolve, with plans for a pedestrian bridge to connect it to Walnut Woods State Park, further enhancing accessibility and recreational opportunities.
