Discover more about Martyr Monument

The Martyr Monument, or Al-Shaheed Monument, stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance in Baghdad. Dedicated to the Iraqi soldiers who lost their lives during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), it has since become a memorial for all fallen Iraqis. Designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk and architect Saman Kamal, the monument was constructed between 1981 and 1983. The monument's design is striking. A 190-meter diameter circular platform sits on an artificial lake. Atop the platform, a 40-meter tall split turquoise dome evokes the Abbasid era. The two halves are offset, with an eternal flame symbolizing life in the space between them. Beneath the monument lies a museum and library. The museum displays artifacts and narratives related to the events surrounding the monument's creation, providing insight into Iraq's socio-political landscape. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the Iran-Iraq War and learn about the soldiers commemorated here. The surrounding area features parks, playgrounds, walkways, and bridges, creating a space for reflection and remembrance.
