Discover more about Kurd's Heritage Museum

Nestled in the heart of Sulaymaniyah on the historic Mawlawi Street, the Kurd's Heritage Museum stands as a beacon of cultural preservation and celebration. This museum is operated by the Revival of Kurd's Heritage Organisation and is dedicated to showcasing the rich history, art, and traditions of the Kurdish people. Founded by Erfan Othman (a heritage expert) and artist Barzan Qadir, the museum began as a personal collection of traditional Kurdish objects in 2000, with the aim of preserving Kurdish relics through self-funding. Over time, their collection grew through purchases, donations, and bequeathments. In 2015, the Regional Government of Iraqi Kurdistan granted them permission to establish the museum in the Farah Hotel, the oldest hotel in Sulaymaniyah. The museum boasts 1,718 registered items, including clothes, jewelry, books, manuscripts, household furniture, firearms, and rugs, with some items dating back 50 to 400 years. While only around 200 items are on display, the collection provides a tangible connection to the past, allowing visitors to visualize the daily lives of Kurdish ancestors. A unique aspect of the museum is its "Jewish Collection," featuring around 25 objects owned by Jewish people who lived in Sulaymaniyah before immigrating to Israel. This includes three rare Torahs and parts of a Mizrahi Torah. Visitors can explore exhibits that span Kurdish history from ancient times to the modern era. The museum also highlights the Kurdish language and literature, underscoring their significance in the region's cultural identity. Interactive displays and multimedia presentations enhance the experience, making it engaging for all ages. The Kurd's Heritage Museum serves as both a cultural hub for the local community and a valuable resource for tourists seeking to understand Kurdish culture.
