    Discover more about City Hall

Dublin City Hall, standing proudly on Dame Street, is a testament to Dublin's rich history and architectural grandeur. Originally designed by Thomas Cooley as the Royal Exchange, it was constructed between 1769 and 1779 to serve as a hub for the city's merchants. This neo-classical building quickly became the epicenter of trade, where Irish Punt was exchanged for English Sterling and tradesmen gathered to discuss business. Today, City Hall is the formal seat of the Dublin City Council. The building's centerpiece is the Rotunda, a large circular hall covered by an ornate, gold-leafed dome supported by twelve impressive columns. Visitors can admire the colorful murals, marble floors, and statues that adorn the hall, each telling a story of Ireland's past. A central mosaic on the Rotunda's floor displays the Dublin City Seal. Throughout its history, City Hall has been a witness to significant events. Daniel O'Connell, a key figure in Irish history, delivered one of his first and most famous addresses here, opposing the Act of Union. During the 1916 Easter Rising, the building was seized by the Irish Citizen Army and played a role in the rebellion. Admission to City Hall is free, inviting everyone to explore its architectural beauty and historical significance.
