Discover more about Blath na Greine

Bláth na Gréine was a unique and unexpected find on Inisheer, the smallest of the Aran Islands. This vegan café, whose name translates to 'Flower of the Sun', offered a delightful array of plant-based dishes in a setting known more for its traditional Irish culture and rugged landscapes. Originally a tea room and craft shop run by Fionnán's family since the 1970s, Bláth na Gréine was transformed into a vegan café by Fionnán and his partner Rebecca. They aimed to offer delicious, accessible vegan food, and for a time, they succeeded in creating a welcoming space for both vegans and non-vegans alike. The café served baked goods, soups, breads, and even a vegan version of the traditional Irish breakfast (must be booked the night before). Inisheer itself is an island steeped in history and natural beauty. Characterized by its limestone pavements, ancient stone walls, and stunning coastal views, the island offers a tranquil escape from the mainland. Visitors can explore historical sites like O'Brien's Castle and the Plassey shipwreck, or simply wander along the scenic trails and enjoy the unique flora and fauna. While Bláth na Gréine is reported to have closed in June 2023, its story reflects a growing interest in veganism in Ireland and the potential for innovative culinary experiences even in the most remote locations.
