If you are traveling by car, head towards Ballinskelligs, a small village located on the beautiful Ring of Kerry. The nearest main road is the N70, which connects you to other major towns in County Kerry. From Ballinskelligs, follow the signs to the Skellig Michael departure point at Portmagee. The journey from Ballinskelligs to Portmagee takes about 15 minutes. There is a parking area available in Portmagee where you can leave your car for the day, but please note that parking may incur a fee.

For those using public transportation, take a bus to either Cahersiveen or Killorglin. From there, you can catch a local bus to Portmagee. Ensure you check the bus schedules in advance as they may vary. Once you arrive in Portmagee, you can walk to the harbor where boats depart for Skellig Michael. The walk from the bus stop to the harbor is approximately 10 minutes.

Once you reach Portmagee, you will need to book a boat tour to Skellig Michael. Several companies, such as Skellig Rock Tours, offer trips to the island. The boat ride takes approximately 30 minutes, and it’s advisable to book your tickets in advance, especially during peak tourist season. The price for a round-trip ticket is typically around €100 per person. Keep in mind that the boat service is weather-dependent, and it is recommended to check the sailing conditions on the day of your visit.

Hiking
Upon arriving at Skellig Michael, you will need to disembark and begin your ascent. The climb to the monastery at the top involves approximately 600 steep stone steps. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as this hike can be strenuous. There are no facilities on the island, so plan accordingly.
