History of North Beach

From Border Settlement to Port City

Modern Eilat was established by Israel in the early 1950s after the country secured access to the Gulf of Aqaba. Its first decades were shaped less by waterfront leisure than by strategic infrastructure, border administration and the development of a southern port. The coast now known as North Beach lay within a sparsely built desert setting, separated from the emerging town’s practical maritime functions. The gulf’s international position, with Jordan across the water and Egypt farther south, gave the settlement significance beyond its modest size and helped establish the basic transport and port connections on which later tourism depended.

Tourism Reaches the Northern Shore

As Eilat developed into Israel’s principal Red Sea resort, the northern shoreline was progressively planned for hotels, beaches and visitor services. The city’s warm winter climate and access to coral reefs encouraged a tourism economy centred on swimming, diving and marine excursions. Large hotel compounds and purpose-built leisure facilities replaced much of the undeveloped coastal character, creating the recognisable North Beach precinct.
