History of Hadera

Hadera was founded in 1891 by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, who were part of the First Aliyah movement. They purchased land from the Arab village of Khirbet el-Katra and established the settlement. The name 'Hadera' is derived from the Arabic word 'khadra', meaning 'green', reflecting the area's lush vegetation.
In its early years, Hadera's settlers faced severe challenges, the most significant being malaria. The swamps surrounding the town were infested with mosquitoes, leading to high mortality rates among the settlers. It wasn't until the early 20th century that the situation improved with the help of Baron Edmond de Rothschild, who financed drainage projects to eliminate the swamps.
With the draining of the swamps, Hadera's settlers turned their focus to agriculture. They planted eucalyptus trees to absorb excess water and established farms for citrus fruits, grains, and vegetables. These agricultural endeavors laid the foundation for Hadera's economic growth.
During the British Mandate period (1920-1948), Hadera experienced significant growth and development. The town became a center for Jewish settlement and Zionist activity. Infrastructure improvements, such as roads and public buildings, were made, and the population expanded rapidly.
With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Hadera played a crucial role in the War of Independence. The town served as a strategic location for the Haganah (the Jewish paramilitary organization) and was a base for military operations in the region. Despite facing attacks, Hadera remained secure and continued to grow.
In the decades following Israel's independence, Hadera transformed into a modern city. It expanded its industrial base with the establishment of the Orot Rabin Power Station and other industrial enterprises. The city also developed its educational and cultural institutions, becoming a vibrant urban center in the Sharon region.
