Vicus Caprarius: Rome's Subterranean City of Water

Vicus Caprarius, also known as the "City of Water", is a captivating archaeological site located just a few steps away from the iconic Trevi Fountain in Rome. This hidden gem lies approximately nine meters below the surface, offering a unique glimpse into the city's ancient past. The site's history dates back to the 1st century AD, when it was originally built as an *insula*, a Roman apartment complex, after the Great Fire of 64 AD. In the mid-4th century, the *insula* was transformed into a luxurious *domus*, or upper-class residence, adorned with intricate polychrome marbles and mosaics. However, a devastating fire, possibly linked to the Vandal sack of Rome in 455 AD, destroyed the *domus*, leaving behind a layer of earth that preserved numerous artifacts. In the 2nd century AD, a large water reservoir, known as a *castellum aquae*, was constructed as part of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct. This reservoir collected and distributed water to ancient Rome, including the Baths of Agrippa and various fountains. Remarkably, the Aqua Virgo is the only one of Rome's eleven ancient aqueducts still functioning today, supplying water to the Trevi Fountain and other famous fountains in the city. Excavations at Vicus Caprarius have unearthed a wealth of artifacts, including terracotta figurines, African pottery, over 800 coins, and thousands of ceramic fragments. These findings offer valuable insights into the daily lives of ancient Romans and the city's rich history. Visitors can explore the remains of the *insula*, the *domus*, and the *castellum aquae*, witnessing firsthand the intricate water systems and architectural features of ancient Rome. The site is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is €4 for adults. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends and holidays. Guided tours are available for an additional fee.
