Discover more about Civic Museum Giovanni Fattori

The Civic Museum Giovanni Fattori offers a captivating journey into the heart of 19th and 20th-century Tuscan art. Located in Livorno, the museum is set within the splendid Villa Mimbelli, a 19th-century villa that was once a private residence. The museum was established to showcase the works of local and regional artists, particularly those associated with the Macchiaioli movement. The museum's origins trace back to 1877 when the municipal administration decided to create an art gallery. Over time, the collection expanded to include works by Giovanni Fattori, Enrico Pollastrini, and Cesare Bartolena, among others. In 1994, the museum found its permanent home in Villa Mimbelli, after being moved around during the Second World War. Villa Mimbelli itself is a work of art, featuring original frescoes and decorations by Annibale Gatti and the Della Valle brothers. The villa's rooms, including the green parlor, Moorish room, and billiards room, are open to visitors. The museum's collection includes works by Macchiaioli artists such as Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega, and Telemaco Signorini, as well as post-Macchiaioli and Divisionist artists. Fattori's paintings capture the essence of Tuscan life and landscapes, showcasing the movement's innovative approach to color and light. The museum is dedicated to Giovanni Fattori, one of the leaders of the Macchiaioli. The Macchiaioli were a group of Italian painters active in Tuscany in the second half of the 19th century, who, breaking with the antiquated conventions of the academies, created a new pictorial language that rejected traditional contour lines and color shading and instead adopted synthetic brushstrokes and "spots" of color.
