Getting there

Walking

From Lucca's city walls, enter through one of the gates, such as Porta San Pietro or Porta Elisa. Follow signs or ask locals for directions to Via Fillungo. Walk along Via Fillungo, and look for signs pointing towards Piazza San Giusto. The Gigli Palace is situated on the north end of the piazza.

Public Transport

Lucca's public transit system consists of a network of buses. From the Lucca train station or bus station in Piazzale Verdi, take a bus that stops near Piazza San Giusto. Check local bus schedules for the most efficient route. A 70-minute bus ticket costs approximately €1.20 if purchased beforehand, or €2 if purchased on the bus.

Taxi

Taxis are available at Piazza Santa Maria and Piazza Napoleone. A short taxi ride to Gigli Palace from either location will cost approximately €10-€15, depending on traffic and the specific starting point.

Parking

Driving within the city walls is restricted, and parking is limited. Paid parking lots are available outside the walls. Consider parking at Park Mazzini, an underground lot northeast of the palace, which costs €0.50 per hour during the day and €1 per hour at night. From the parking lot, it's a 10-15 minute walk to Piazza San Giusto. Be aware of ZTL zones to avoid fines.

Overview

Located on Piazza San Giusto, the Gigli Palace, currently known as Palazzo Lucchesini, stands as a testament to Lucca's architectural history. Constructed around 1529 for Giovan Paolo Gigli, the palace was designed by Nicolao Civitali and is notable as the oldest palace in Lucca featuring a Florentine-style internal courtyard. The site was historically significant, once housing the Lombard Royal Court and the mint that produced Lucca's famous gold tremisse.The palace's architecture showcases its Renaissance origins, with an elegant doorway framed by two columns and windows adorned with carved frames. Inside, the first floor retains the Gigli family crest on the wooden inlaid ceilings. The palace remained in the Gigli family until 1661, after which it was acquired by the Lucchesini family. Since 1893, it has been the seat of the Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca.Today, Gigli Palace attracts visitors with its stunning façade and well-preserved structure. Its central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring Lucca's other attractions, including its historic walls and local museums. Piazza San Giusto, where the palace is located, is a bustling place with beautiful structures and a vibrant atmosphere.
