Constructed around 1529 for Giovan Paolo Gigli, the palace was designed by Nicolao Civitali and is notable as the oldest palace in Lucca featuring a Florentine-style internal courtyard. The site was historically significant, once housing the Lombard Royal Court and the mint that produced Lucca's famous gold tremisse.
