Palazzo Belgioioso, also spelled Belgiojoso, is a palatial residence completed in 1781 in the Neoclassical style by Giuseppe Piermarini. Commissioned by Prince Alberico XII di Belgioioso d'Este, it stands on the site of his birthplace off Via Manzoni. The design is inspired by Luigi Vanvitelli's Palace of Caserta, showcasing a departure from Piermarini's earlier, more austere style. The palazzo's facade features a rusticated bugnato ashlar finish on the ground floor, with giant order columns and a triangular tympanum accentuating the central section. Bas-reliefs and decorative moldings adorn the windows of the upper floors. Inside, a monumental staircase leads to the piano nobile, showcasing period decorations, including frescoes by Martin Knoller and stuccos by Giocondo Albertolli. Rinaldo's room, also decorated by Knoller, draws inspiration from Torquato Tasso's poem 'Jerusalem Delivered'. During Alberico XII di Belgioioso d'Este's ownership, the palazzo became a gathering place for intellectuals, including the poet Giuseppe Parini and writer Ugo Foscolo. A restoration in 1991 revived the mansion's original splendor. Today, Palazzo Belgioioso remains a captivating architectural landmark, housing offices, residences, and a restaurant.
