Caves of Pastena: A Subterranean Spectacle

The Caves of Pastena, located in the province of Frosinone, offer a mesmerizing journey into the depths of the earth. This karst cave system, formed millions of years ago, showcases nature's artistry through stunning geological formations. Discovered in 1926 by Carlo Franchetti, the caves were opened to the public in 1927 and have since become a popular destination for tourists seeking a unique adventure. The caves are divided into two main sections: the active and inactive branches. The active branch features a subterranean river, the Rio Mastro, which creates impressive waterfalls and lakes, while the inactive branch displays towering stalactites, stalagmites, and unique cave formations. The caves have served various purposes throughout history, from a place of worship for the ancient Volsci people to a shelter for locals during the bombings of World War II. Visitors can explore the caves on guided tours, which typically last about an hour and a half. Knowledgeable guides lead visitors through the illuminated passages, sharing insights into the cave's geology, history, and ecology. The temperature inside the caves remains a constant 15°C (59°F), so a light jacket is recommended. Comfortable walking shoes are also advised, as the paths can be uneven in places.
