Montepertuso: The Pierced Mountain Above Positano

Montepertuso, meaning "pierced mountain," is a captivating hamlet perched above the world-famous Positano on the Amalfi Coast. The village gets its name from the prominent hole in the Mount Gambera, a natural arch that has become a local landmark. Legend has it that the hole was created during a battle between the Virgin Mary and the Devil. According to the tale, the Devil tried to create the hole himself but failed. The Virgin Mary then compassionately touched the mountain, creating the hole with her finger and defeating the Devil. The silhouette of the Devil is supposedly still visible in the rocks today. This triumph of good over evil is celebrated each year with a festival. Historically, Montepertuso was a remote village, accessible only by a challenging climb of approximately 1,500 steps. More recently, a road was built, making the village easily accessible by car or bus. Despite the improved access, Montepertuso has retained its authentic charm, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional Italian village life. Today, Montepertuso is a popular destination for hiking enthusiasts, with several trails connecting the village to the Lattari Mountains and other nearby hamlets. The Path of the Gods, a famous hiking trail, passes near Montepertuso, offering breathtaking coastal views. Visitors can also explore the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Fontana Vecchia (Old Fountain), known for its clear water.
