Palazzo Carafa della Spina: A Baroque Masterpiece in Naples

Palazzo Carafa della Spina, a historic palace on Via Benedetto Croce (part of Spaccanapoli) in Naples, stands as a testament to the city's rich architectural and cultural heritage. Situated between Piazza del Gesù Nuovo and Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, the palace belonged to a branch of the Carafa family. Originally constructed in the 16th century, Fabrizio Carafa della Spina, Prince of Butera and Roccella, acquired a palace with a garden along Via di Nido. He demolished it to erect a new building, likely designed by Domenico Fontana. The palace was remodeled in the Baroque period and underwent further restoration in the 18th century. The elaborate Baroque portal, crafted from piperno rock, serves as a grand entrance to the courtyard. Two satyrs, acting as telamons, support the balcony above the portal, bearing the heraldic shield of the Carafa family. Below, masks and pylons adorned with lion heads add to the ornate design. The portal and internal stairwell are attributed to Ferdinando Sanfelice. Inside, the palace features decorated portals, a courtyard with piperno architectural elements, and a monumental staircase. The staircase is characterized by two arches that follow its ascent. Today, Palazzo Carafa della Spina houses a charming bed and breakfast, offering guests a chance to experience the atmosphere of a historic Neapolitan palace. Its central location provides easy access to Naples' historic center and cultural attractions.
