Founded in 1737 by King Charles of Bourbon, it is Europe's oldest continuously active opera house, predating Milan's La Scala and Venice's La Fenice. The theater's construction was driven by King Charles' desire to provide his capital with an opera house that rivaled those of other major European cities.Designed by Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale, the Teatro di San Carlo initially accommodated around 3,000 spectators. Today, after renovations, it seats 1,386. The opera house boasts a traditional horseshoe-shaped auditorium adorned with dazzling frescoes and red and gold decor. The ceiling features a canvas by Antonio, Giuseppe, and Giovanni Cammarano, depicting Apollo presenting poets to Minerva.Throughout its history, the Teatro di San Carlo has undergone several restorations, most notably after a fire in 1816. Architect Antonio Niccolini rebuilt the theater in just ten months, enhancing its magnificence with new decorative elements and improving the acoustics.
