Discover more about Via Krupp

Via Krupp is more than just a path; it's a work of art etched into the dramatic landscape of Capri. Commissioned by the German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp in the early 20th century, it was designed to connect his luxury hotel, the Grand Hotel Quisisana, with Marina Piccola, where his research vessel was anchored. The pathway descends approximately 100 meters (330 feet) through a series of tight hairpin bends, seemingly overlapping as they carve into the rock. The views from each turn are spectacular, offering unique perspectives of the coastline, the Faraglioni rocks, and the azure sea. The path is surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation, adding to the visual feast. Via Krupp has a controversial past. While ostensibly built for convenient access, it's rumored that Krupp used the path to reach a grotto where he engaged in scandalous activities with local youths. This led to his expulsion from Italy in 1902. Due to the risk of falling rocks, Via Krupp has been closed for extended periods since 1976. However, after extensive safety work, it reopened in June 2023 and remains free to visit. A walk along Via Krupp takes about 15 minutes, though the views may extend this. Nearby attractions include the Gardens of Augustus, Charterhouse of San Giacomo, and Marina Piccola.
