Castel Nuovo: A Symbol of Naples

Explore Castel Nuovo, Naples' iconic medieval castle: a historic royal residence housing art, history, and stunning architecture by the waterfront.

4.4

Castel Nuovo, or Maschio Angioino, is an iconic medieval castle that dominates the Neapolitan waterfront. Erected in 1279 by Charles I of Anjou, it was intended to distinguish itself from the city's other castles, Castel dell'Ovo and Castel Capuano. The castle served as a royal seat for the Kings of Naples, Aragon, and Spain until 1815. Under the reign of Robert, King of Naples, the castle became a cultural hub, hosting prominent figures like Petrarch and Boccaccio. The castle's structure was significantly modified in 1443 when Alfonso V of Aragon took control, transforming it into a massive fortress in the Catalan Gothic style. The impressive Triumphal Arch, celebrating Alfonso's entry into Naples, is a highlight of the castle's exterior. Today, Castel Nuovo houses the Civic Museum, displaying Neapolitan paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts. Visitors can explore the Palatine Chapel, the Armoury Hall with its visible Roman ruins, and the Hall of the Barons. The castle's five imposing towers and sturdy walls tell stories of battles and sieges, offering a glimpse into Naples's turbulent past.
