Historical Legacy

Caffè Gilli traces its origins to 1733, when the Swiss Gilli family opened a sweet shop in Via de’ Calzaiuoli during the era of Grand Duke Gian Gastone de’ Medici. Quickly embraced by Florentine nobility, it evolved into a confectionery landmark. By the late 19th century, it relocated to Via degli Speziali opposite the Trianon, and in the early 20th century, settled in its current Piazza della Repubblica spot, becoming a hub for literary cafés amid the city's Belle Époque vibrancy.

Iconic Architecture and Ambiance

Step through the arched glass entrance featuring Florence's most famous clock, entering a preserved Art Nouveau (Liberty style) interior. Marble columns, intricate decor, and intimate tables evoke a bygone era of opulence. The grand salon feels like a noble drawing room, where time pauses amid gilded details and soft lighting, contrasting the bustling piazza outside.
