Discover more about Naramachi

Naramachi, located southeast of Nara's city center, is a captivating district that once thrived as the city's merchant quarter. This historical area developed around Gangoji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Nara's Seven Great Temples. Originally, the area was part of Heijo-kyo, the state capital during the Nara period (710-794), evolving from a religious and cultural center into a bustling commercial hub. Today, Naramachi's narrow, winding streets are lined with beautifully preserved machiya, traditional merchant houses characterized by their narrow facades and deep interiors. Many of these historic buildings have been transformed into museums, art galleries, cafes, and boutiques, offering a blend of traditional and contemporary experiences. Wandering through the district, you'll find sweet shops specializing in local confections, craft museums showcasing Nara's creative past, and the Imanishike Shoin Residence, where you can enjoy green tea in its serene gardens. Don't miss Gangoji Temple, which played a central role in Naramachi's history. Originally built in Asuka and relocated to Nara around 718 AD, it is considered one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples. The temple's unique architecture, particularly its roof tiles and the Gokurakubo Hall, reflects cultural exchanges with Korea during its early history. Also, look out for the red monkey charms, Migawari-zaru, placed at the entrances of houses to ward off evil spirits, a longstanding tradition in Naramachi.
