    Discover more about Sagi Pond

Nestled in Nara Park, south of Nara city's main area, Sagi Pond offers a tranquil retreat from the surrounding attractions. Known as the 'Pond of the Herons,' it's celebrated for its clear waters and the herons that elegantly glide across its surface, creating a magical atmosphere. The pond has been an integral part of the Kofuku-ji Temple complex since the 8th century, designed for both spiritual contemplation and as a water source. The Ukimi-do gazebo, a hexagonal wooden pavilion connected by a bridge, sits in the middle of the pond, providing a unique vantage point. Visitors can walk to the center and enjoy panoramic views, making it a favorite spot for photographers. The pond and its surroundings transform during the cherry blossom season, attracting couples and photographers alike. Rowboats are available, offering a romantic experience on the water. Every year, from August 5 to 14, the Nara Tokae Lantern Festival illuminates the area, with candle lanterns lighting up the pavilion and reflecting on the pond's surface. While the pond has faced challenges with water quality due to the deer population and algae, efforts have been made to improve its condition. Sagi Pond remains a symbol of harmony between nature and human needs, offering a blend of relaxation and picturesque scenery.
