Discover more about Sapporo Fushimi Inari Shrine

Sapporo Fushimi Inari Shrine, nestled in the Fushimi district of Sapporo, Hokkaido, offers a tranquil escape with a touch of Kyoto's iconic charm. Founded in 1884 by Shigeo Nomura, the first head priest of Sapporo Shrine, it enshrines a deity from Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Taisha. In 1907, the shrine moved to its current location on Mt. Moiwa, becoming a beloved spiritual spot. The shrine's most striking feature is its 27 vibrant vermilion torii gates. These gates create a tunnel-like path that winds up the hillside, offering a captivating visual experience and a sense of journey. The vermilion color symbolizes life and energy and is believed to protect against natural disasters. In winter, the contrast between the red gates and the white snow creates a breathtaking scene. Dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice and agriculture, the shrine is believed to bring good fortune in industrial development, bountiful harvests, and business prosperity. Fox statues, considered messengers of Inari, are found throughout the grounds. Visitors can also find a special 'Wish Stone' to write their wishes on. The shrine provides a serene atmosphere for contemplation and offers stunning views of Sapporo. At dusk, the torii gates are softly lit by traditional lanterns, creating a mystical ambiance.
