Discover more about Chiran Samurai Residence Garden

The Chiran Samurai Residence Garden, located in Minamikyushu, Kagoshima Prefecture, is a captivating historical site that transports visitors to the Edo period. This well-preserved samurai district, also known as Chiran Bukeyashiki, features a 700-meter street lined with former samurai residences and meticulously maintained gardens. The area is often referred to as "Satsuma's Little Kyoto" due to its elegant architecture and historical atmosphere. During the Edo period (1603-1868), the Satsuma Domain implemented a unique system that dispersed samurai throughout the territory, leading to the creation of districts like Chiran. Today, seven of these gardens are open to the public, each showcasing distinct landscaping styles. Six of the gardens are designed in the Karesansui (dry landscape) style, often incorporating Mount Hahagatake as borrowed scenery. The Mori Shigemitsu Garden stands out as the only pond-style garden. Visitors can stroll along the main street, admiring the stone walls and hedges that enclose the residences. While the interiors of the houses are not accessible, the gardens offer a glimpse into the lives and aesthetic sensibilities of the samurai who once lived there. The gardens reflect influences from Kyoto designers and incorporate elements inspired by Chinese landscape paintings. The attention to detail in the pruning and arrangement of stones is evident throughout. Beyond the gardens, Chiran offers other attractions, including the Chiran Peace Museum, which commemorates the lives of kamikaze pilots during World War II. The town is also known for its green tea production, with picturesque tea plantations dotting the surrounding landscape.
