Discover more about Maritime Museum & Occupation Tapestry Gallery

Located by the historic harbor of St Helier, the Maritime Museum & Occupation Tapestry Gallery offers an immersive journey through Jersey's seafaring past and its experiences during World War II. The museum is housed within a set of five 19th-century warehouses on the New North Pier, constructed in the 1880s. These warehouses, once used by harbor customs and maintenance teams, were transformed in 1997 to create this engaging museum. The Maritime Museum showcases the island's unique maritime environment and rich seafaring history. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing Jersey's shipbuilding legacy, fishing practices, and its role in global maritime trade. Interactive displays allow you to feel the force of a gale, understand the tides, and even design and float a ship. Immerse yourself in songs and stories of the sea, and investigate the island’s myths and legends. A highlight of the museum is the Occupation Tapestry Gallery, which features 13 colorful panels depicting life and hardship under German occupation during World War II. Woven by islanders to commemorate the 50th anniversary of liberation, each panel represents a different parish and tells personal stories of resilience and survival. Interactive screens accompany each panel, providing further insights into this period of Jersey's history. The gallery also features first-hand accounts from people who lived through the occupation, as well as a film about the tapestry and other stories from the era.
