Discover more about Elephant Conservation Center

Nestled on the edge of a large lake and backing onto the Nam Pouy National Protected Area in Sayaboury Province, the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) offers a unique opportunity to connect with these gentle giants in a responsible and ethical manner. The ECC was established in 2011 to protect the Asian elephant, whose population has declined due to habitat loss and exploitation. The ECC provides a sanctuary for elephants rescued from the logging and entertainment industries. Here, elephants can roam freely within a 540-hectare protected forest, socialize, and receive necessary veterinary care at the center's specialized elephant hospital – the first of its kind in Laos. The center also runs a breeding program to help increase the population of Asian elephants and reintroduce them into the wild. Visitors to the ECC can observe elephants in their natural environment, learn about their behavior and social structures, and understand the challenges they face. The center prioritizes the well-being of the elephants, so there are no elephant rides or exploitative activities. Instead, guests can participate in educational programs, walk alongside elephants in the forest, and observe them bathing. The ECC also provides employment and training to local mahouts and their families, promoting sustainable practices and community involvement. The ECC has been granted the “CONSERVATION GOLD” award by Asian Captive Elephants Standards (ACES) and named the 4th best destination globally to observe elephants by WANDERLUST in 2023.
