Discover more about Rose Square

Rose Square, or Rožu laukums, is more than just a garden; it's the vibrant heart of Liepāja. For over a century, this square has been adorned with roses, making it a focal point for both locals and tourists. Originally, this location housed the New Market (Jaunais Tirgus). The buildings with the two small towers, which once housed butcher shops, serve as a reminder of this past. In 1910, the market was moved to Kuršu Street, and the City Council decided to create a rose garden in its place. The square acquired its current name in 1911. The rose beds were designed with a strict geometric layout, featuring symmetrical pathways. Today, the concrete edges of the rose bed display the symbols of Liepāja's sister cities, each facing the direction of its corresponding city. Throughout the year, the square offers a changing display of blooms. Crocuses appear first in spring, followed by daffodils and tulips. Summer brings the roses into full bloom, filling the air with their fragrance. In winter, the square transforms into a romantic Christmas scene. A Manchurian walnut tree, recognized as nationally significant, grows nearby. The square also hosts community events, adding to Liepāja's cultural scene.
