Discover more about Cecīļi Nature Trail

Cecīļi Nature Trail, located in the Gauja National Park near Ieriķi, invites visitors to explore the stunning landscapes of Latvia. This well-marked trail winds along the banks of the Kumada and Dančupīte rivers, offering a chance to witness untouched nature and discover fascinating geological formations. The trail features several notable sights, including the impressive Cecīļi Rock, a sandstone cliff rising over 10 meters high and stretching 100 meters long along the Kumada River. Explore the Dančupīte Canyon, a miniature waterfall, and the Dančupīte Cave, formed within the sandstone. Keep an eye out for the Cecīļi Pine, one of Latvia's recognized secular trees. According to local legend, the Cecīļi area was once inhabited by a devil and two witches who danced in front of the Cecīļi Rock caves. Angered by the locals, the devil attempted to dam the Kumada River with sand, but was scared off by a rooster's crow, leaving behind a hillock of sand. Fragments of armadillo fossils, dating back to the Devonian period when Latvia was covered by a shallow sea, have been found near the mouth of the Dančupīte River and are displayed at the trail's visitor center. The trail offers different routes, including a small circle (2 km) marked with green arrows and a longer circle (12 km) marked with blue dots, which includes the "Wild Cubes" section. The trail is generally accessible year-round, but be prepared for slippery and muddy conditions in wet weather. During the autumn and winter months, the Cecīļi Rock and Dančupīte are illuminated on Saturdays and by prior arrangement.
