Discover more about Power Plant Forest

The Power Plant Forest is a unique initiative transforming a small plot of land in Zouk Mosbeh into a green haven. Zouk Mosbeh, located approximately 20 km north of Beirut, has been identified as one of the most polluted cities in Lebanon and the MENA region, largely due to the emissions from the Zouk Mosbeh power plant. This power plant, dubbed the 'Power Plant of Death', burns fossil fuels and releases harmful pollutants into the air, impacting the health and environment of the surrounding community. The Power Plant Forest project, driven by the architecture firm theOtherDada, seeks to combat this pollution by creating an urban forest using the Miyawaki technique, a method developed in Japan to quickly return native species to deforested areas. The project involves planting native trees and shrubs on a highly visible, 200-square-meter lot located between two busy streets, with the power plant as a backdrop. This location was chosen to raise awareness among the general public about the importance of environmental sustainability. The forest not only helps reduce air and noise pollution but also aims to regenerate lost biodiversity in the area. It stands as a symbol of hope and a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in addressing environmental challenges. The project has faced challenges, including delays in obtaining permissions and the ongoing operation of the polluting power plant, but it continues to grow and inspire.
