Discover more about Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection

Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection (LCRP) stands as a beacon of hope for chimpanzees in Liberia, offering sanctuary and care to those orphaned or displaced by the illegal wildlife trade. Founded by Jenny and Jimmy Desmond, the organization has rescued over 80 chimpanzees, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment in the Marshall Wetlands. LCRP's journey began with the rescue of 66 chimpanzees abandoned on islands after being used for biomedical research. The Desmonds stepped in to provide care and establish new protocols, which led to the creation of LCRP. The sanctuary has grown into a conservation center, working with local communities and international partners to protect chimpanzees and their habitat. The sanctuary's facilities include a night dormitory, nursery, and veterinary facilities, ensuring the chimpanzees receive the best possible care. The chimpanzees spend their days in a 450-acre forested area, allowing them to live as naturally as possible. LCRP also focuses on community engagement, promoting sustainable agriculture and conservation education to improve the lives of both chimpanzees and local people.
