Discover more about Mangturm

The Mangturm, standing proudly at Hafenplatz 2 in Lindau, is a captivating vestige of the city's medieval past. Constructed around 1200, this robust tower was an integral component of Lindau's defenses, serving as a watchtower and signal post when Lindau held the status of an Imperial Free City. Its name is derived from the nearby Tuch- und Mangenhaus, warehouses of the clothiers' guild. Originally, the Mangturm was approximately 20 meters (65 feet) tall and equipped with embrasures, providing an ideal vantage point for safeguarding the sea harbor. In 1856, with the completion of Lindau's new lighthouse, the Mangturm was retired from its duties as a signaling and observation post. It was then raised by one story and adorned with distinctive glazed tiles, transforming it into the picturesque landmark it is today. For centuries, the tower remained inaccessible to the public, but it opened its doors in 2008 and has since become a popular attraction. Visitors can ascend the spiral staircase to the top, where they are rewarded with breathtaking views of Lake Constance (Bodensee), the surrounding old town, and the Alps. Each floor features exhibits detailing Lindau's history, the tower itself, and Lake Constance. The ground floor often hosts changing exhibitions related to local culture and history. The Mangturm also serves as a unique venue for events, including concerts, exhibitions, and even weddings.
