Public Bus
From Gaithersburg, head to the Gaithersburg Transit Center located at 1 Montgomery Village Avenue. Board the Ride On Bus Route 55 towards the Shady Grove Metro Station. Stay on the bus for approximately 25 minutes. Get off at the 'Shady Grove Metro' stop. From there, transfer to the Metro Red Line towards Glenmont. Ride the Metro for about 30 minutes, disembarking at the 'King Street-Old Town' station. Once you exit, transfer to the Metrobus Route 11 towards the Mt. Vernon area and ride for about 15 minutes until you reach the 'Mt. Vernon' stop. Follow the signs to Mt. Vernon from the bus stop.
Metro Rail
If you are near the Gaithersburg Metro Station, board the Red Line towards Glenmont. Stay on the train for approximately 30 minutes, and get off at the 'King Street-Old Town' station. At King Street, exit the station and transfer to the Metrobus Route 11, which goes towards the Mt. Vernon area. Ride the bus for about 15 minutes until you reach the 'Mt. Vernon' stop. Follow the signs from the bus stop to Mt. Vernon.
Bicycle
For the more adventurous, rent a bicycle from a local bike-sharing service. Start from the Gaithersburg area and head southeast towards Lakeforest Mall. Take the MD-355 S (Rockville Pike) bike path until you reach the intersection with the Shady Grove Metro Station. From there, follow the bike paths that lead towards the waterfront area near Mt. Vernon. It will take about 1.5 hours of cycling to reach Mt. Vernon from Gaithersburg, depending on your cycling speed and route taken.
Walking
While walking from Gaithersburg to Mt. Vernon is quite a distance, if you are up for a long trek, you can start by heading south on MD-355 (Rockville Pike). Follow the pedestrian paths along the road. It's about a 12-mile walk, which can take approximately 4 hours. Along the way, you can enjoy the scenery and stop at various parks or cafes for breaks. Make sure to stay hydrated and wear comfortable shoes!
