Michigan Memorial: A Tribute to Valor at Vicksburg

Honor Michigan's Civil War heroes at this solemn and striking monument within Vicksburg National Military Park. A tribute to courage and sacrifice.

4.2

Located within the historic Vicksburg National Military Park, the Michigan Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Michigan soldiers during the Civil War's critical Vicksburg Campaign. The 37-foot tall obelisk, crafted from white Bethel Granite, was dedicated on November 10, 1916. The memorial features a sculpture by Herbert Adams, representing the "Spirit of Michigan". The base is inscribed with the words: "Michigan's Tribute of Honor to Her Soldiers who Served in the Campaign and Siege of Vicksburg". The memorial stands where Captain Samuel DeGolyer's 8th Michigan Battery was positioned during the 47-day siege; DeGolyer was mortally wounded nearby on May 28, 1863. The Michigan State Legislature authorized a commission on June 18, 1903, to determine the positions of Michigan troops in the campaign and siege of Vicksburg. The commission chose the location for the memorial because it was considered among the most sightly in the whole line of investment. Today, the Michigan Memorial is a key stop for visitors exploring the Vicksburg National Military Park. It provides a place for reflection on the past and appreciation for the natural beauty of the area.
