Discover more about Missouri State Capitol

Dominating the Jefferson City skyline, the Missouri State Capitol stands as a testament to the state's rich history and vibrant culture. This is the third capitol in Jefferson City, with the first built in 1826. That building was destroyed by fire in 1837. A second capitol was completed in 1840, but it too was burned after being struck by lightning in 1911. The present capitol was constructed between 1913 and 1917 and officially dedicated in 1924. The building itself is an architectural marvel, designed in the Roman Renaissance style. The exterior is constructed of Carthage, Missouri limestone marble, and the interior is adorned with artwork by notable artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Sir Frank Brangwyn. The grand stairway, the bronze doors, and the dome are among the building's most impressive features. Atop the dome is a bronze figure of Ceres, the Roman goddess of grain. Inside the Capitol, visitors can explore the Missouri State Museum, which features exhibits on the state's history, natural resources, and culture. Free, 45-minute guided tours are available, providing insights into the building's history, architecture, and artwork. The grounds surrounding the Capitol are beautifully landscaped, featuring memorials and gardens.
