Discover more about Historic Rodgers Theatre

The Historic Rodgers Theatre, located on North Broadway Street in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, stands as a testament to the golden age of cinema and a vibrant community spirit. Built in 1949 by I.W. Rodgers, the theater quickly became a cultural hub, celebrated as the most modern and luxurious venue between St. Louis and Memphis. The theater's architecture is a striking example of late Art Deco and Art Moderne design. The facade features a prominent ziggurat tower and a brightly lit marquee with the theater's name in large red letters. Inside, patrons were greeted by solid walnut doors, leather benches in the circular lobby, and a concession stand. The auditorium originally boasted 1,160 'Bodyform' seats, including some with hearing aid attachments, and a soundproof 'crying room' for mothers with young children. The building also housed a dime store and office spaces. After being sold to the Kerasotes chain in 1966 and later converted into a two-screen cinema, the Rodgers Theatre closed in 1998. However, its story didn't end there. In 2001, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and since 2007, the theater has been undergoing restoration, hosting occasional live concerts and community events. Today, the Rodgers Theatre continues to serve as a venue for live performances and community gatherings, keeping the spirit of entertainment alive in Poplar Bluff. Visitors can experience a variety of events at the Rodgers Theatre, from concerts and plays to classic movie screenings. The theater's rich history and stunning architecture make it a must-see destination for anyone visiting Poplar Bluff.
