The Jackson County Historical Society (JCHS) stands as a cornerstone of historical preservation and education in Independence, Missouri. Its roots, however, trace back to 1909. The Society operates an Archives and Research Library within the Truman Courthouse on Independence Square, offering access to a vast collection of documents and photographs. The Jackson County Historical Society is located within the Truman Courthouse on the Independence Square. From anywhere on the Square, walk towards the center. The Truman Courthouse is a large, white building that dominates the square. Enter the building and proceed to Suite 120 on the first floor to find the History Center.

While fixed-route bus lines in Independence have been largely replaced by the IRIS On-Demand transit service, the Route 24 still operates.
