The ruins of Tiraspol Fortress stand as a testament to the city's rich and complex history. Founded in 1792 by Russian Generalissimo Alexander Suvorov during the reign of Catherine the Great, the fortress was strategically positioned to protect the newly acquired lands of the Russian Empire following the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1791. The Treaty of Iasi granted Russia the territory between the Southern Bug and Dniester rivers, and Tiraspol Fortress was established as a key part of the Dniester defense line. The fortress was designed by engineer Franz de Volan and construction was completed in just two years. Unlike other fortresses of the time, it was not built with stone walls. Tiraspol itself was founded in 1795 near the fortress, becoming an important administrative center. As the Russian border shifted westward following the Russian-Turkish War of 1812, Tiraspol Fortress gradually lost its military significance. Over time, most of the fortress was dismantled, leaving only a small fragment of its former glory. Today, visitors can see the remaining powder magazine of the bastion of St. Vladimir, an architectural monument from the 18th century. While not extensive, the ruins offer panoramic views of Tiraspol and provide a tangible link to the city's founding and its role in the region's history.
