Discover more about Exotic Garden of Monaco

The Exotic Garden of Monaco, or Jardin Exotique de Monaco, is more than just a garden; it's a journey through diverse landscapes and ancient history. Inaugurated in 1933 by Prince Louis II, this botanical garden is home to over a thousand species of succulent plants, originating from various arid regions across the globe, including South Africa, Mexico, and the Arabian Peninsula. Prince Albert I first became fascinated with succulent plants in the late 1800s and acquired land to create the garden in 1912. The garden is laid out along a cliffside, offering panoramic views of Monaco and the Mediterranean. The sheer size and variety of the cacti and succulents are remarkable, with many plants over a century old. The garden's design incorporates natural-looking rock features and footbridges, adding to its unique charm. Beneath the garden lies the Grotte de l'Observatoire, a prehistoric cave adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Guided tours take visitors deep into the cave, revealing the fascinating geological formations shaped over thousands of years. Bones of animals eaten by prehistoric humans have been found in the cave, offering insights into climate change over the last 250,000 years. The Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, located within the garden, displays many ancient relics discovered in the grotto. Currently, the Exotic Garden is undergoing renovation and safety work and is scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2025. In the meantime, visitors can explore the Botanical Center, located opposite the garden, which houses a collection of rare and endangered cacti and succulents.
