Discover more about Jardin d'Acclimatation

Nestled in the heart of Monaco, the Jardin d'Acclimatation offers a serene escape from the city's glamorous bustle. Founded in 1954 by Prince Rainier III after a trip to Africa, this intimate animal park spans one hectare and houses a diverse collection of animals. Originally featuring mainly primates, the Jardin d'Acclimatation has expanded to include around 70 species, with a total of 250 to 300 animals. The park also took in five species from the St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat Zoo when it closed in 2009. As one of the world's last royal menageries, it is home to small mammals, reptiles, farm animals, birds, and even a hippopotamus. Visitors can also admire flamingos, various duck species, and families of marmosets and tamarins in the park's lush, tropical vegetation. It's worth noting that the Jardin d'Acclimatation acquires its animals through donations, circuses, abandoned animals, or those seized by customs, rather than purchasing them. When the park's facilities can no longer provide the best living conditions, animals are exchanged or transferred to more suitable locations.
