Discover more about New National Museum of Monaco – Villa Sauber

The New National Museum of Monaco (NMNM) – Villa Sauber is a cultural landmark dedicated to contemporary art and the Monegasque artistic heritage. Located in one of the last Belle Époque villas in Monaco, Villa Sauber provides a unique setting where history and modern creativity converge. The villa itself is a historical monument. While its exact construction date remains unknown, it is well-documented that the Blanc family, instrumental in developing the Société des Bains de Mer and the Casino de Monte-Carlo, owned it in the early 1900s. In 1904, the London painter Robert Hermann Sauber acquired the villa, and it served as his studio for about ten years. The villa's architecture bears a resemblance to the Monte-Carlo Opera House, leading some to speculate that Charles Garnier, the Opera House architect, designed it. Throughout its history, Villa Sauber has had several owners. In the early 1930s, the Saubers bequeathed the villa to the Court Funds of the City of London Police. In 1969, it became the property of the State of Monaco. In 1972, Villa Sauber was transformed into the Musée National de Monaco. Until 2008, it housed Madeleine de Galéa's collection of dolls and automatons. Since 2009, it has been a venue for temporary exhibitions, mirroring Villa Paloma since 2010, together forming the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco. Today, visitors can explore contemporary art exhibitions within the villa's elegant halls and surrounding gardens. The museum hosts rotating exhibitions showcasing established and emerging artists, exploring themes that bridge tradition with innovation. Educational programs, workshops, and cultural events further engage visitors, making Villa Sauber a dynamic space for artistic expression.
