Discover more about Princess Grace Japanese Garden

The Princess Grace Japanese Garden, or Jardin Japonais, is a stunning municipal park located on Avenue Princesse Grace in Monaco's Larvotto ward. This 0.7-hectare garden offers visitors a tranquil escape into Japanese culture and design. Commissioned in 1994 by Prince Rainier III, fulfilling a wish of Princess Grace, the garden was designed by Yasuo Beppu, winner of the Osaka Flower Exhibition. Beppu masterfully created a miniature representation of Shintoist philosophy through the garden's various features. The garden incorporates classic Japanese garden elements, including a stylized mountain, a hill, a waterfall, a beach, and a brook. A Zen garden provides a space for meditation and contemplation. The garden seamlessly blends Japanese tradition with the Mediterranean environment. Many materials, such as bamboo hedges, tiles, stone lanterns, and wood for the structures, were imported from Japan. Local Mediterranean plants like pine, olive, and pomegranate trees were carefully cultivated over three years to fit the Japanese aesthetic. Visitors can explore the garden's winding paths, discovering vibrant koi fish in tranquil ponds and enjoying the soothing sounds of nature. Explanatory panels offer insights into Japanese traditions. The garden is open daily, offering free admission to all. It's a place to unwind, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of harmonious design.
